Every once in a while, someone says something that stays with you.

One of our ministry partners in the Democratic Republic of the Congo recently shared a story that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

Pastor Jonas has faithfully served his community for years. Over time, a medical clinic was established. Mothers found a safe place to deliver their babies. Children began attending school. Families learned healthier farming practices. A ministry for people with disabilities was started. A church began to grow.

None of those things existed there a generation ago.

One day, the village chief called Pastor Jonas forward. In front of others, he presented him with what was known as the community’s symbol of power. Then he explained why.

“I have watched what has happened in this community,” he said. “I can tell you are a very powerful man.” Pastor Jonas gently handed the honor back where it belonged. “I am not a powerful man,” he replied. “But I serve a very powerful God.”

I love that response. Because that’s really the story.

The clinic wasn’t built to become the center of attention.

Neither was the school.

Or the farming program.

Or Pastor Jonas.

They simply became Points of Care where God has created thousands of Moments of Care over the years.

Lives have been changed.

Families have been strengthened.

A community has been transformed.

And one village chief recognized the true source of it all.

A very powerful God.
