The little boy’s ear hurt. And his hearing was getting worse.
When your FAME trip co-leader Suzie examined him during a recent FAME medical mission outreach in Kenya, she discovered the problem. A cockroach had crawled into his ear and died.
It took several people to hold the frightened little boy still while Suzie numbed him and carefully removed it, piece by piece. Then she flushed his ear several times to clear what remained.
It’s certainly not the kind of medical story you hear every day.
But what stays with me isn’t the cockroach.
It’s that someone who knew what to do was there when this little boy needed her.
That’s what a Point of Care can look like.
Sometimes it’s a clinic with diagnostic equipment. Sometimes it’s a trained healthcare worker with medicine. And sometimes it’s a medical professional with a few basic supplies, meeting a child whose problem has become painful and frightening.
The equipment may change. The setting may change. But the goal is the same:
Get the right person, with the right resources, to the right place so a Moment of Care can happen.
