A young man arrived at one of your FAME clinics, which opened last year serving people who often have very limited access to healthcare, with a badly broken leg.

The medical team did what you would expect.

They treated his immediate needs, splinted the leg to prepare for his travel, prayed for him and his family, and then sent him to the hospital for the additional care his injury required.

It could have ended there.

But a Moment of Care became the beginning of a relationship.

As the young man recovered, he became friends with the local evangelists who followed up on him every week. Whenever they saw him, they prayed with him. They talked with him about Jesus. They continued to care—not simply for his broken leg, but for him and his family.

Two months later, something remarkable happened, the young man and his family decided to follow Jesus. They were baptized and became part of God’s family.

But even that wasn’t the end of the story.

The relationships that began through medical ministry continued to grow. The Gospel reached further into the community.

And this year, our partners report that two new churches have been planted through their medical ministry, one in that community, and one where similar relationships grew.

Think about that progression:

A Point of Care.
A broken leg.
A Moment of Care.
A relationship.
A family introduced to Jesus.
And now, two churches.

Sometimes when we talk about clinics, medical equipment, supplies and other FAME projects they could sound as if they are the Points of Care.

But the building isn’t really the point.

The point is what can happen there.

A Point of Care puts a Christian doctor, nurse, healthcare worker or ministry leader in a place where someone can turn on a difficult day. And in that encounter, there is an opportunity to offer excellent medical care, compassion, prayer—and a relationship that may continue long after the bandage comes off.

That’s why healthcare can be such a powerful doorway for the Gospel.

We don’t know what will come from every Moment of Care.

Sometimes it’s simply a fever treated, a wound cleaned or a broken leg stabilized.

And sometimes…a broken leg is where the story of two churches begins.
